Mountain gorillas in the jungle!

Last Wednesday we had an amazing experience. We met face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas on the slopes of Mount Sabinyo in north-western Rwanda.

Gorillas are the largest primates on the planet and mountain gorillas are the largest type of gorillas. These gentle giants are on the brink of extinction with only approx 700 individuals remaining in the world. All of these are living in the mountains on the border between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

To encounter these large “relatives” in the middle of the jungle is an unforgettable experience. In order to be able to meet the mountain gorillas, one must book a permit well in advance and follow a guide all the way. In our group we were 8 people and you are only allowed to stay with the gorillas for one hour (once you have found them ;-)), in order for them to stay wild!
